Steam Trading Adds "Trade Offers"

Posted by Omnomnick on 04 Sep at 11:18 PM4 Comments
As part of the continued expansion of Steam, Valve have announced the introduction of"Trade Offers" for the Steam Trading system. The new feature, which is aimed at promoting the trading of items between friends, will allow users to select which items they would like to trade before deciding what they would like to receive in return for the offered goods. Once sent, the other user will receive a Steam notification which will allow them to open and consider the offer before accepting or denying it. Users may also counteroffer if the opposing party is dissatisfied with the original proposal.

The announcement page highlights that, unlike regular Steam Trading, Trade Offers do not require both parties to be online at the same time. This means you could send off a trade request to a friend before you head out to work, only to return later that evening to find it has been accepted, even if you were offline all day. The system appears to function similarly to the Steam Marketplace, as proposed items will be automatically removed from a user's inventory and sent to the other party once an offer is accepted, helping to prevent potential scams and false trades. Trade Offers can be created from your profile's inventory or from a friend's inventory, as well as from the badge progress pages for Steam Trading Cards.

Coming Soon: Players who share computers can also share their Steam games

September 11, 2013 – Steam Family Sharing, a new service feature that allows close friends and family members to share their libraries of Steam games, is coming to Steam, a leading platform for the delivery and management of PC, Mac, and Linux games and software. The feature will become available next week, in limited beta on Steam.

Steam Family Sharing is designed for close friends and family members to play one another's Steam games while each earning their own Steam achievements and storing their own saves and application data to the Steam cloud. It's all enabled by authorizing a shared computer.

“Our customers have expressed a desire to share their digital games among friends and family members, just as current retail games, books, DVDs, and other physical media can be shared,” explained Anna Sweet of Valve. “Family Sharing was created in direct response to these user requests.”

Once a device is authorized, the lender's library of Steam games becomes available for others on the machine to access, download, and play. Though simultaneous usage of an account’s library is not allowed, the lender may always access and play his games at any time. If he decides to start playing when a friend is borrowing one of his games, the friend will be given a few minutes to either purchase the game or quit playing.
